Community Service Description

On July 1, 2006 the Community Service Program became funded through project income monies and local grants rather than state grant monies. This program component serves felons as well as misdemeanants. The Steuben County Community Corrections Advisory Board believes that this program component provides a necessary and valuable service for our community. Community service is also used by the Conduct Adjustment Board as a consequence for violations committed by home detention defendants. The overall program purpose of the Community Service Restitution Project is to rehabilitate non-violent offenders through the completion of community service hours within our local community. Numerous local agencies support this program through providing positive role models as our non-violent offenders perform community service. The Community Service Restitution will provide an effective consequence for home detention technical violations by adult felons and allow the courts and the Conduct Adjustment Board to have consequences for rule violations without removing the offender from the home detention program and sending the offender to the Department of Corrections.

On February 4, 2009 the Community Service Program was expanded to assist the Home Detention Program.  If a Home Detention participant does not work at least 20 hours a week then that individual is required to complete 20 hours of Community Service a week.  These new crews will allow the Community Service Program to better serve the community by cleaning up roads, painting/cleaning/maintaining community buildings, and assisting non-profit organizations.  The new crews are every Wednesday and Thursday from 9:30am to 4:00pm.
